The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has announced that it will begin issuing penalties for overdue Taxable Payments Annual Reports (TPARs) starting 22 March. Businesses that have received three reminder letters but have yet to lodge their TPAR for 2024 or previous years may face significant fines.
Businesses in certain industries that make payments to contractors are required to lodge a TPAR by 28 August each year. The affected industries include:
If a business no longer pays contractors or does not need to lodge a TPAR, it must submit a Non-Lodgment Advice (NLA) form to the ATO to avoid penalties.
The ATO uses TPAR data to identify contractors who may be under-reporting income. If discrepancies are detected, the ATO may contact businesses or their tax agents to correct tax returns.
